Story:

Perched on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this mid-century modern home was one of the first residences built in its Laguna Beach neighborhood. Originally built by the owner's father, the home holds deep personal meaning for the family. Rather than demolish and rebuild, the owners sought to carefully restore the aging structure, preserving its original character while thoughtfully adapting it for contemporary living.

Our architectural approach centered on preserving the home's modest scale, original materials, and intimate relationship with the landscape. A new opening at the entry establishes a visual connection from the private garden courtyard, through the dining and living spaces, to the expansive ocean views beyond. Original wood paneling, custom cabinetry, and the central double-sided concrete block fireplace were carefully preserved and restored, complemented by subtle contemporary interventions.

Encompassing architecture, interiors, and conceptual landscape design, the restoration celebrates the home's history and understated architectural qualities. Quietly nestled into the hillside and barely visible from the street, the renewed home retains the warmth, simplicity, and sense of place that have defined it for generations.
