This project was located on a beautiful hillside wooded site in Del Mar, California. The intention was to create a house organized around landscaped central courtyards. The house was also oriented to take advantage of the distant ocean views. Creating dynamic moments where one can stand in the courtyard, see through the home, and see the hillside/ocean view beyond was essential for us.
In the central courtyard and pool areas, we designed sliding glass doors that open and pocket, allowing open-air access to the courtyards and pool. Axial views through the home were strategically designed to create powerful experiences, where one can see through several layers of the house and see out to nature.
Key to the design was a simple and curated material palette that reflected the colors and textures of the adjacent landscape.
